Is it possible to assign multiple permissions to files which is shared
across Windows (with CIFS) and UNIX (with NFS) machines?

In standard UNIX environments, you can only assign a single ownership and
a single group ownership to a given file or directory. In Windows you can
assign multiple permissions to a single file (or directory). Some can
read, some can write, some can delete and some are excluded from even
viewing the file or directory. If set up correctly, will the same
permisions be applied when the data is shared via NFS?

As I know there is no way to specify more than one group or one owner (except via group). But there are several registry entries which influences the behaviour of the permissions:

IgnoreUnixPermissions
UnixDirectoryCheck
UseUnixLocks
UseUnixGroups

Have a look into the documentation for further information about the different values.
What about using ACL to assign multiple group and user permissions within Tru64?

Regards,
Greg

Hello-

I agree with configuring the ACL in order to obtain multiple permissions to the files.

However, being able to set multiple permissions to the files will depend on how you configure the user(s) to access the 'share(s)' you create in the smb.conf file (well, if you are using CIFS (SAMBA). These permissions should translate over to the client (be it Windows or UNIX).

Mike Elleby
