LDdriver V9.0 is now available for fieldtest. The major new feature is Logical Magtape (LM) support, that is to use a file on disk as a magtape.

Notice that it's a fieldtest, so don't use it on a production system right now. It will only work on Alpha and Ia64, VAX is NOT supported.

I didn't see any mention of simulating hardware compression in logical magtapes to save space. The CPU usage could present a problem if the driver would need to do it all inner mode.

How big is the metadata block? Big enough to cache a large number of tapemark locations for fastskip support?

Compaction is not there yet, it will be in the future. The metadata is currently 1 block, but it is flexible and can be resized at will if needed. Fastskip is also future.
