Hello All,

I current running a MicroVax 3100 model-80.
With un-limited VMS licence.
I just purchase a MicroVax 3100 model-90 for backup use, just in case something happen.

I use the image backup tapes from the orginal Vax model 80 and load into the model-90 and look like it working fine. But look's like the Vax-vms licenses can not found. Since if I login in using the other port. there is a message say
"no license is active for this software product" .

Is there anyway to get the Vax-Vms license from the model-80 dump into the model-90.

I don't have any doc. from the model-80. (Like lic. pak..) Someone load it in before my time

Thanks !

You know, that this is only legal, if the primary system dies :-)?

Both systems should need the same units, so the licenses should load, any /INCLUDE should have no effect, since you did an image backup.

What do you mean, login using other port?
Maybe you have only 1 user license and a 2nd login via a serial line is not allowed.

It would help, if you could post the result of a SHOW LICENSE [/FULL] command.

regards Kalle

I need to test model-90 to make sure it working fine.

There are 3 ports at the back of the Model-80
I plug into anyone them I can login.
But I can only plug into concel port on the
model-90 will work. The other 2 don't.
saying "no license is active for this software product" .
I think I need the checksum key for the dec-vms or I missing some files.

Thanks!

I know you said you restored from image backup of the original model 80, but did you change the nodename of the model 90 after that? If the system names are not the same you need to modify the VMS license on the model 90 with the new system name (use /INCLUDE switch of the LICENSE command)

I would suggest doing SHOW LOGICAL LMF$LICENSE on both nodes. This shows the path to the license database. Make sure that you are referencing the same database on both nodes. It's possible that the database referenced on model-80 is not on the system disk, and has not been copied to model-90, and on model-90 you are referencing an old copy of the database.

sub0,

Check out SHOW LICENSE/UNIT_REQUIREMENT on each node. I suspect the model 90 has a higher Type A requirement than the type 80. You have 18 units for the type 80 PAK. If the 90's unit requirement is higher, the PAK won't load. You can confirm this with:

$ LICENSE LOAD VAX-VMS

Although the license agreement for most products allows you to increase the units of a PAK (see MOD_UNITS option on most of your PAKs), that's NOT permitted for the base operating system PAK. Those PAKs are bound "to the metal". You should have a VAX-VMS (or equivalent) PAK for the model 90. You're not supposed to be able to purchase the hardware without a valid software license.

Assuming you have, or can obtain a valid PAK for the model 90, your recovery procedure should include a step where you activate the correct PAK for the system. If it's truly a standby/DR system, maybe REGISTER the PAK for the model 90 on the model 80?

Since you own the 90 hardware already, and it's a "better" box than your current production system, why not spend a few more bucks on a proper sized VMS license and swap the systems? Better performance for production and you already own the right license for your 80 as a backup system.

Lemons into lemonade ...

Cheers,
Art

Thank you all for the feel back. We have 2 Vax running here. One Micro-Vax Model 80 (production), and a Micro-Vax II 3900 (development) have Fortran 77 and Dibol ( Prev. DEC accountant s/w MCBA).

I just find out None of the above system the Licence Pak is missing. ( someone install them before me, and I don't look after system s/w here till now).

Now I need to information or link to see,
Where can I recover the Model 80, fortran and Dibol license pak back. If not I have to keep both Vax running and if it go down I have to get parts to repair them.

I do agree I should get the Vms lic for the model 90 and upgrade the system. I will inform my Boss and see what he said. But the Vax model running very well and I don't think he want to touch it.

But if anyone have the link to get the above Lic. pak please let me know.

Thanks !
