Thanks. but is there any specific docs that I requested for in the list there because they have so many manuals. I only need the one that has only yhte basic commands and then after the advance commands.

As I recall, there are a few that are more focused on user commands, the DCL Dictionary etc.

I do recall however once walking into the office of the famous Stan Rabinowitz and asking what he was doing.

"Reading all of the manuals" was the reply.

"What, all 36,000 pages"

"Yup"

Well, it was more of a browse/speed read, but even an expert like him found massive benefit in being able to spot things that he hadn't thought of etc.

Here you can find most of VMS basic DCL commands with good descriptions...

http://seqaxp.bio.caltech.edu/www/vms_beginners_faq.html

Later you can go through "HP OpenVMS DCL Dictionary vol 1 and II" from HP docs website which stewen mentioned above.

Archunan

The manual you will want to start with within the manual set is the OpenVMS User's Guide. This covers basic concepts, tools and techniques.

There are several tutorial web sites referenced in the OpenVMS FAQ http://www.hoffmanlabs.com/vmsfaq and there are various books around (in and out of print, some of which might already be at your site). The FAQ has listings of and links to listings of OpenVMS books, as well.

The OpenVMS for Dummies book was around a while back, too, but copies of that are tough to find. Writing Real Programs in DCL (2nd ed) is another. Both are AFAIK out of print. (Which reminds me, I need to check with the publisher about the status of the latter.)

The Deathrow and Encompasserve sites are also listed on the site, and these will provide no-cost non-commercial access to OpenVMS on VAX and Alpha systems. These too are listed in the FAQ.

And as it appears you are familiar with Unix, there are web sites (also listed in the FAQ) that compare Unix and DCL commands.

Stephen Hoffman
HoffmanLabs

I always thought "HELP" was one of the greatest tools VMS had. Very intuitive and easy to follow. Also follow the "DCL_Tips".

Also once you get an idea or question - ask about it. See how others have used the DCL in their command files or what commands they have used to accomplish the same thing.

There was one other book I had - Unix for VMS users - just have to transpose the commands.
See http://www.openvms.org/pages.php?page=Books for a list of third party books. The DCL dictionary and System Manager Manual are both good places to start, the link for the HP documentation site has already been posted.

You may also want to consider a class or having one of the fine consultants (self included) here visit your site for an introduction.

Andy
