KYO FS 920 with Axis Printserver

Hi,

Here a problem I want to resolve now for some weeks. My network and printer group doesn't want to have internal network cards in the printers any more. So I have now the following test "area":
OpenVMs 7.3-1 with DCPS 2.2 and TCP/IP 5.3 ECO2. And my test equipment is an AXIS Printserver 5400+ that is connected to the parallel port of an Kyocera FS 920. I want to print via DCPS and TCP/IP on this printer. But....

Nothing happens. The lights of the printer are flickering some times then the printer stands still and does nothing (no error, nothing). And after some minutes the queues is stalled on OpenVMS.

Here is the queue I've installed:

Printer queue AXIS_TEST, idle, on SELLA2::"IP_RawTCP/10.112.65.252:9100",
mounted form DCPS$DEFAULT (stock=DEFAULT)
/BASE_PRIORITY=4 /DEFAULT=(FORM=DCPS$DEFAULT (stock=DEFAULT))
/NOENABLE_GENERIC /LIBRARY=DCPS_LIB Lowercase /OWNER=[SYSTEM]
/PROCESSOR=DCPS$SMB /PROTECTION=(S:M,O:D,G:R,W:S) /SCHEDULE=(NOSIZE)

Has somebody some good ideas, what can I do (except opening the window and throw it away...)?

Kirsten,

I don't see evidence of any Kyocera printers being supported by even the latest version (v2.6) of DCPS. Are you able to print to a Kyocera that has an internal nic when using the DCPS symbiont?

Hi,

I've tested yesterday evening with a Kyocera FS-1050 with an internal network card. When I use this card I can print everything I want. When I use after this the Axis Printserver at the parallel port nothing happens.
So I think the problem could be the Axis Printserver or the parallel port of the printer.

Kirsten,

I assume then that the printer is treated as an unrecognized printer by DCPS. If you upgrade DCPS to the latest version you can try using lpd/lpr combined with the logical name DCPS$queuename_PRODUCT_NAME equated to "HPGENERIC" for the Kyocera queue.

If you have not done so already, I'd get your manager involved. Let your management sort this one out; that's what they get paid for.

I can understand the IT drive to get a common reporting infrastructure for out-of-paper and
such that the Axis widget apparently provides, but moving away from integrated NICs is going to have its costs in configuration, set-up and operation. You're just not going to have the command and control and ease of integration of a printer using a third- (or fourth-) party external NIC.

While I think the Axis stuff will help with some remote management (and IT is looking to save money here), I'd think that standardizing on a series of printers and integrated NICs might provide a better economy for all involved.

Hi Hoff,

I think the same way than you. But our guys from the Hardware team want to have a better solution than the internal card. Our printers must work 7 days, 24 hours a week. If one now is broken you must only replace the printer without configuring it with the IP-configuration. This is saved in the AXIS printserver... (this is what this team thinks).
But I will talk to my manager about this problem....
