Hi all

I am new for VMS. For started to work for 4- nodes within 1 cluster VMS system about 1 week

I found there are many materials on the web and most of them are quite difficult.

So I would like to ask which documents should I study for more deeply understanding for OpenVMS. I had go throught user manual and part I of system manager manual.

Thank for providing me valuable opinion
Hello,

welcome in VMS-land! A good starting point for all kinds of VMS related information is the FAQ
at
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/wizard/openvms_faq.html

Also the online help (jus type help at the prompt) is your friend.

Once you do have specific questions you will also find that the people around here are generally good natured and willing to help.

Greetings, Martin

Sai,

there is so much documentation available that you can spend weeks!
A link to HP's documentation site is here:

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/

While there is a search option on that page, I have not had much luck with it - I rather use http://www.google.com/
See, if you can get the documentation CD-ROMs. They are available in VMS and ISO-9660 format, so you can read the last one on a PC.

It sounds like you are going to work as a system manager. In that case I suggest you also make yourself a little bit familiar with the server hardware (you didn't say what servers you have to look after). My experience is that it helps to understand the whole system a lot better.

Have fun on your new job!

Hi Sai,

On the VMS forum page only , at the bottom you will see useful links. You can start with OpenVMS user's manual, then system managers manual.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/familyhome.do?familyId=288

HTH,
Best regards,
Lokesh

In parallel to learning the basic concepts of VMS system management (i.e., all the above replies), I found that the DCL Dictionary (2 volumes) to be invaluable. Still is 20 years later. :-)
If the VMS Utilities and Commands class is still available, I highly recommend it.

Hello,

one more thing, in my experience a good class can help quite a bit to get started, since it does allow direct interaction with somebody "in the know". Unfortunatly I am not familiar with the service providers in the far east, maybe your local hp account rep will be able to help.

Greetings, Martin

P.S. In case you do have a Unix background, there is a book "Unix for VMS users". It should work the other way round too :-)

Some more suggestions:

When you are able to login to your VMS machines, remember the HELP command is your friend.

Other resources use:
The newsgroup comp.os.vms. Alot of good knowledge, but a lot of noise.

Telnet to eisner.decuserve.org and get an account. There is a very good discussion area there called NOTES.

Goto http://www.openvms.org/ and look around.

Be sure to ask questions if you don't understand something.

Welcome to VMS and good luck.
