OpenVMS fails to boot from IDE CDROM

Hi,

My customer has a DPWS 600au system(Miata/MX5) and he is not able to boot OpenVMS V7.2 CD from the IDE CDROM.

From Cybrary, it is stated that the Miata/MX5 generation is not supported to boot OpenVMS CD from the IDE CDROM.

For the Miata/GL generation, there is a workaround to boot the IDE driver from the floppy drive first in order to recongise the IDE CDROM. It states also that this applies to V7.1-1H2 only.

Can anyone advise me?
1. Are the above still valid?
2. Does the OpenVMS V7.2 CD has this driver included?
3. If Miata/MX5 does not support to boot IDE CDROM from OpenVMS CD, what options does customer has?

what version of firmware on the system? The firmware has to be up to date for this to work. If you do a SHOW CONFIG at the console do you see an entry like this?

ana/sys clue config

should give you the information on the Cypress as well without the need to reboot. I have a PWS600au here that just boots fine from the IDE CD (TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6302B).

Thank you for your reply.

From console, the output of "show config" shows this entry,

Bus 00 Slot 07: Intel SIO 82378

which according to Cybrary, this is a Miata/MX5 and it is not compatible to read the IDE driver.

There is currently no OpenVMS loaded in this system, therefore could not run the analyse clue command.

Hello Ronny,

the easiest solutions

a.) Get a SCSI CDROM for the box (even original DEC/Compaq/hp parts can be found pretty cheap on eBay)

b.) Backup the installation CD on an existing VMS system to disk, then use that disk to install from on the PWS. Added bonus: Much faster than installing from CD ;-)

Thanks, I thought of doing that as well, to swap in a SCSI CDROM.

The reason of posting this query in the first place is because the tips in Cybrary and postings found in Qtip are quite old dated and I am just hoping there may be some fix released for this Miata/MX5 which I may have missed out.
