Hello D,

CM is a very sweeping buzz word. Can you give some more details on what you want to accomplish? Everything from homegrown indexed files to expensive third party solutions is possible. Also do you have already CM for other systems that you might to integrate etc.

I guess when I write configuration management, I am writing about change management. This would be for a team of 5 or so developers in a couple different locations that need check-in, check-out, and differencing capabilities.

D Fin,
I have worked myself as a VMS developer for quite some time and one product i could recommend is called as CMS (its Code Management System).

Normally its referred to as CMS in the VMS world and its a pretty neat product. Like many apps, i must warn you that its command line :-)

You may want to look into CMS (Code Management System), which is a part of the DECset suite (though you can also buy it separately). Go to:

and click on one of the "SPD" links.

There are also clients available for cvs and (I think) Perforce.

Er, Mobeen, it's only command line if you want it to be. You can access it via NetBeans:

and I belive there is also a native DECWindows interface.

there is also a MS Windows front end for CMS (if you like that sort of thing :-)

You can Go for RCM (Revision Configuration Management) , For more details check the below links,

Its an Layered Product by DEC and has to be installed on a single node of an cluster.It
can collect various information regarding system,its devices,tapes,sysgen parameters, installed softwares etc.
It wakes up according to the user selected schedule and
uses SYSMAN to start a data collector process on each node selected and
available. It waits for all the data collectors to finish and then zips
the results together and sends them to desired destination .

for what you want CMS looks like a good solution if we are talking a VMS centric approach. I did use it in former times (incuding the DECwindows interface ;-) and liked it quite a bit. I can not comment on TRUEchange from own experience. Looking at their website I did not find a statement that it actually supports VMS. If you do need to integrate with other systems you might be able to get something with CVS to work (Note: VMS can only act as a client to CVS).

I have not used it, but I have heard good things about Perforce. (www.perforce.com)

These comments came from a customer who used CMS in the past. The customer also tried CVS, but came to the conclusion that perforce was the best.

Hi,

No one seems to have mentioned that explicitly, but DECset also includes Module Management System aka MMS which nicely complements CMS. It's useful for automation of rebuilding apps, especially when you start juggling with many compiler and linker options and want to ensure you don't miss a command qualifier during rebuild. I also think you won't save very much on buying CMS solely, while with complete DECset you also get LSE/SCA which also integrates well with CMS. Other components of DECset are probably not as necessary as the previous ones.

Hi,

I also can recommend MMK as a "make" tool. It works great and is very stable. Note though that this "only" replaces the MMS part of DECset, i.e. not LSE, CMS, SCA or PCA.
