Ok here goes. I worked Main-Frame and Mini's too long ago to remember the dates. I will say that I got into this business still in my teen years. ;-)

Cut my teeth on Data General Nova Series and ASR-33 paper tape loaders (anyone remember NOVA checker-board I/II/III tests?). Man how I hated Paper Tape read errors...

Long Hardware history with Control Data, IBM (S/360-M30, 1130 with 4k (gotta love 2315, Selectrix & Punch Card loads;http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/1130/1130_intro.html) & Series 1)), CA, GA, Data General, Sperry-Univac (http://vipclubmn.org/cp16bit.aspx (AN/UYK-502, 1616, etc...ever try to program one of those puppies?)), Burroughs gear and then DEC.

For reasons still not quite clear to me at the time, DEC became my favorite when I hit the PDP-8s and PDP-11 series. The front panel 3rd party disk and tape bootstrap switch sequences (prior to the M9302/12s) were addicting. The routines I memorized (out of sheer boredom during PMs) always amazed even the DEC guys, who would show up for a PM or a SYSGEN. The customers would always make me show them how fast I could key in an 11/70 bootstrap routine or code changes. ;-)

Anyway long and boring stuff... Worked with RSTS/E, RSX-11, RT-11, VMS (since the VAX 11/750 series), RS/6k, AIX, MVS, Solaris, IRIX (SGI - GREAT stuff to work on back then). I have forgotten much more...

So a long road to where I am now in Hardware and Software Support. Mainly on HP Products (DEC/Compaq/HP - I Still blame Palmer), SUN, IBM in multi-platform Clustered High-Availability Mission Critical environments or AKA High-Stress when the sh*t hits the fan.

Still think VMS was the best OS for troubleshooting any hardware issue unlike some of the stuff we work on these days. If VMS ran then about 95% of your hardware was good to go without even have to run diags. But those diags, DEC knew how to make a Hardware guy work for it! DS> ATTACH DWMBA HUB ...WTF?

PCL11 "Clustering" anyone?

One of my favorite VAX machines to work on, VAX8650 breaking codes inside the T-11 or using the Pro-380 on a Nautilus system. Those were the days.

OK, I need to stop...my head hurts.

Great Forum and I am in awe of the sheer talent that gathers here daily (Volker's Crash Analysis is a thing of beauty). I lurked for the longest time before jumping in and have actually been a member since the EBS days (under another account). BTW: I still have my DECUS Member Information Kit and Card from 1988 (OK so I joined late).

Oh well, I had the first of those in the Netherlands to configure and integrate.
Imagine, for 2 weeks a brandnew 8650 was _MY_ PC (as in truely my Personal Computer) !

I remember working with PDPs and typing in the boot sequence for UD-33 controllers to format new disks. At the end, it was a good week when a disk didn'st fail somewhere.

Yes the Nic comes from Crash and Burn.

I got from my Moto-Cross days when someone from Dirt Bike Magazine took a photo of me riding with a cast on my broken foot and caught me in another endo (end-over-end) during my heat. They posted it in their column 'Crash and Burn'.

It also applies to a very young FE working a PM on an 11/70 when DEC first put the 871 breakers in the open area under the cabinet door in the rear and if you step just close enough with (my) big feet, you can cause quite a panic for the system manager running month end.

Been there - Done that.
