The 640x RAID controller has just been released on OpenVMS (Alpha) and Integrity.

I am mostly interested in 2620/4640 Integrity servers.

Assuming - just for this example - that I have 2 300 GB disks using RAID 1.

Can I partition this physical diskgroup into one or more BOOTABLE partitions
= OpenVMS system disk(s) of say 10-20 GB each ????

In addition to the bootable partitions I want to configure the remaining diskspace into one or more normal OpenVMS disks ???

Can this be done from console-mode ?, from a booted OpenVMS DVD ? or will
I need to run OpenVMS from a SCSI disk on the internal/external
SCSI controller?

The 640x is a SmartArray controller and those allow the creation of multiple logical disks within a disk drive array. So, technically, yes, you should be able to create multiple logical disks with a RAID-level of 1 on a 2-disk drive array.

The RAID-level is a characteristic of an individual logical disk / a disk drive array is not 'partitioned' into multiple logicald Disks. If you create a disk drive array with more disks you can create a logical disk with RAID-1 and another logical disk with RAID-5.

The question remains whether you get an appropriate management utility (ACU) that allows to do that.

Lars,

the ITRC 'police' has apparently removed Sue's entry for the 6402/6404 SmartArray announcement.

Consider to use google to search for 'openvms acu-xe' - I hope the ACU-XE page for OpenVMS will show up again some time soon... The URL should be or once was:

h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/products/acuxe/

Volker.
