Check your particular license PAKs for a software product release date or for the (rarely used) maximum version limit. The termination date specification doesn't "care" about the release nor the version.

There's always been a requirement for a Right To Upgrade (RTU) license or a software support contract around; this for the administrative and contractual permission to use a newer OpenVMS version.

There have been any number of odd and specific and corner-case licenses issued over the years. There are licenses issued from various sources. Mainstream and typical commercially-purchased licenses -- presuming the RTU -- are generally just fine from one same-architecture version to the next.

There are a collection of licensing articles available, including:

http://64.223.189.234/node/31
http://64.223.189.234/taxonomy/term/28
I am about to upgrade OVMS(Alpha) 7.3-2 to 8.3 (Alpha) and I came across a comment in the preparations sections of the upgrade procedure:

IMPORTANT:: To upgrade to OpenVMS Version 8.3 you must have an appropriate license.

I am a little curious since I am UPGRADING, and therefore I clearly have a current OpenVMS license, is this jut HP being extra paranoid??. Or (and I have difficulty with this) is there really a different license for Version 8.3.

Dave

Dave,

to legimately upgrade the version of an OpenVMS licensed software product, you need an upgrade license or a support contract, which includes RTNV (right to new version).

http://licensing.hp.com/swl/view.slm;jsessionid=aaapVpOlPBZ-Ektm93_s?page=upd

Volker.
