Hi,

One customer have upgrade from VMS7.3-2 to 8.3
and now they have problem whit some LPD queues.
TCPIP 5.6 eco2 is running.
I have this logfile.
Hope that someone can have some input.

Is it possible that this is a "issue" whit this module in tcpip?.

Kjell,

a TCPIP image should not abort with an ACCVIO, so this is most likely a software problem within TCPIP. Make sure that the TCPIP images are o.k. - check with TCPIP SHOW VERS/ALL.

Check for a TCPIP$LPD*.DMP file on the system disk.

This process crash could be triggered by a bad print request.

Setting the TELNETSYM logicals will not help, you will have to set the Symbiont-Debug option in the TCPIP$LPD.CONF file - see TCPIP Management manual.

At its simplest, lpr is broken here. If you have a support contract, ring up HP and pass along details of the failure. (V5.6 ECO2 looks to be the current ECO kit. Given the relative age of ECO2, there may well be some fixes past that kit available from HP.)

If this is a LaserJet 4300 series printer as implied by the name shown and if there is some flexibility around the selection of the symbiont software interface for the print queues, there are alternatives.

As a workaround, consider using the telnet symbiont.

Here, I would encourage installing and using DCPS; the DECprint Supervisor software. DCPS is more capable here, and fully supported with OpenVMS and with TCP/IP Services and with the LaserJet 4300 series printer and with the various features and capabilities of that printer, and the DCPS license is included with OpenVMS.

Of these options, I'd switch to DCPS.

Hi,
Thanks for the input.
They have support contract but not 24*7 only daytime but we setting up a call now.And we are trying to find a workaround now. Start to se if we can use DCPS or Telnet que.
I dont think it is possible to downgrade tcpip either.
I send a debug as one attachement is this telling you any more.

are there any pending entires in this queue ? Is this the only LPD queue on that system ? If there are others, do they work or fail in the same way ?

Does TCPIP SHOW VERS/ALL show patched versions (newer link date) for
TCPIP$LPD_SHR.EXE and TCPIP$LPD_SMB.EXE ?

You could try the versions from the TCPIP V5.6 SSB PCSI kit.

No pendings job/entries in the que.
TCPIP SHOW VERS/ALL show ECO2 link date and version.
I try to find the exe files from V5.6 SSB PCSI kit - Where can i find the kit on the Openvms site?

you need to locate the TCPIP V5.6 kit on the OpenVMS Alpha V8.3 Operating System CD. It's not available for download.

Is this the ONLY LPD queue on this system ? Can you create another test LPD queue and check if the error is reproducable with that queue as well ?

It look that TCPIP V5.6 ECO3 is able to fix this problem.
The only thing is that is not aviable for download.
" TCPIP V5.6 ECO 3
If this version of TCPIP kit is not installed then starting the
LPD queue may result in an access violation."
Maybe only the right lpd exe files could solve the problem?
But the customer waiting for the ECO3 and then we will instal on one test systÃ«m.

Question : did you install the RMS-V9.0 patch?

If yes you will also needt the TCPIP5.6ECO3(not yet released) to get the lpd-queues working.

HP knows about this problem.

Yes the rms-v09 path was installed.
We now have the LPD exe files from OpenVMS support and it is up and running.

I had early feling that this was one "issue" whit TCPIP but it not alway easy to tell but whit this feedbach from the forum members life sometimes is easier in the computerhall.

Interesting that RMS-V9.0 patch has an installation rating of 1 (all customers install), but it breaks something that there isn't a released patch for.

What is holding up the TCPIP ECO3?

Just got a confirmation from the customer referencing this thread that they did have the RMS 8 installed and that ECO3 has indeed fixed their problem.

From the release notes:

A latent coding defect within the LPD symbiont led the symbiont
to exit with an ACCVIO condition once the VMS83A_RMS V8.0 (or
later) patch was installed on an OpenVMS 8.3 Alpha system.

with the RMS V8.0 or V9.0 patch.
