Hi,

I am using an Itanium 8.3-1h1 openVMS server.

I had installed and uninstalled products several times on this machine without any issues.
Recently we moved this server to a different location.
After this movement, when we started up the servers, we started facing issues with product installations.

Whenever I try to install any product I receive the below mentioned error messages:

$ prod install *

...

Performing product kit validation of signed kits ...

%PCSI-E-VALFAILED, validation of <<PRODUCT>> failed

-PCSI-E-CDSA_TEXT, CSSMERR_CSSM_ADDIN_UNLOAD_FAILED: Addin Unload function failed

%PCSIUI-E-ABORT, operation terminated due to an unrecoverable error condition

$

The error is not only with this product, it's also with other products which I am trying to install.
So, it's not an issue with this product, but I guess I need to enable some parameter/image etc so that this issue can be solved
I tried googling for this, but could not get much on this.

Any thoughts on how can we resolve the issue?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Almond</PRODUCT>

Hi Brit,

I hope I would be able to see CDSA in the "product show product" list.

I have read that CDSA is automtically installed and configured for openVMS 8.3 and higher. But, a casual search on Internet did not provide me anything about how to start CDSA on 8.3-1h1.

How can I check that CDSA is started?
and if it is not started? how can I start it?

Regards,
Almond

Hi,

There is no Startup procedure for CDSA. It internally maintains CDSA MDS Database. Incase if there is some problem with the database (some corruption), you can execute the "@SYS$STARTUP:CDSA$UPGRADE" procedure and then try to install the product.

Thanks & Regards,
Vasu

Hi,

I executed the scripts: SYS$COMMON:[SYS$STARTUP]VMS$INITIAL-050_VMS.COM and SYS$STARTUP:CDSA$UPGRADE.com, but it did not help.

I read in one of the PDF's that HP offers regarding CDSA. In that it was mentioned that openVMS 8.3 and higher versions do not need to install and configure CDSA.

I could find an work around to this problem. If I delete the files which cause the kit validation, I am able to install the products (though I get a message that kit could not validated).
But, I do not think I should be doing this on a regular basis.
Any suggestions on how can we resolve this issue?

Regards,
Almond

Hi,
>>>How to avoid the validation error?
PCSI provides option to not to validate the kit.
For Ex:
$PRODUCT INSTALL <KIT_NAME> /OPTIONS=NOVALIDATE_KIT

Above command Disables validation of software product kits that are signed.

To identify the problem is with the CDSA or PCSI kit? You can verify the CDSA validation by hand ( i.e. Not through PCSI). Folllow below steps to do the same.
Ex:
$ VALIDATE :== $SYS$SYSTEM:CDSA$VALIDATE.EXE
$ VALIDATE /$1$DGA198/VMS......./DEC-AXPVMS-VMSXXXXX-V100--4.PCSI$COMPRESSED

Regards,
Murali</KIT_NAME>

Hi,

I've seen the same symptom on an OpenVMS Alpha V8.3 system. Kits, which have been installed on this system before, now suddenly fail to validate with the CSSMERR_CSSM_ADDIN_UNLOAD_FAILED error.

No CDSA related errors during the last startup.

I could not find any troubleshooting guidelines to narrow down this problem, so I raised a call with HP.

Besides PRODUCT INSTALL/OPTIONS=NOVALIDATE_KIT , the following also helped:

$ DEFINE SYS$LOGIN SYS$SYSROOT:[SYSMGR]

and allowed the validation to proceed. In this case, product installation was not being done from the SYSTEM account.

Volker.

Maurizio,

thanks for your reply. But in my case, this problem has NOTHING to do with PCSI, because it can be reproduced with the VALIDATE command (utility SYS$SYSTEM:CDSA$VALIDATE.EXE) alone.

$ @SYS$MANAGER:CDSA$SYMBOLS

$ validate /dsa1/kits/hp-vms-t4-v0403-1-1.pcsi$compressed
Validation of /dsa1/kits/hp-vms-t4-v0403-1-1.pcsi$compressed FAILED.
Error: CSSMERR_CSSM_ADDIN_UNLOAD_FAILED
Addin Unload function failed

In this specific case, the problem has been narrowed down (using SET WATCH FILE/CLASS=MAJOR) to a second login directory file for this user with a lowercase file name. There existed DSA0:[000000]USERNAME.DIR and DSA0:[000000]username.DIR. After deleting the username.DIR file, everything worked correctly (both VALIDATE and PRODUCT INSTALL).

Volker.
