I'd start with the OpenVMS home page at http://www.hp.com/go/openvms/

At http://www2.openvms.org/kparris/ you can find a couple of presentations that can help introduce you to the architecture of VMS:
o Introduction to OpenVMS Technology
o OpenVMS Clusters: Theory of Operation

The series of books by Ruth Goldenberg, et al, on VMS Internals and Data Structures are good for learning how VMS works inside. For OpenVMS Clusters, the book VAXcluster Principles by Roy G. Davis is excellent.
