What about a forum "Migration Vax/Alpha -> IA64"

Just a suggestion.

Would it be a good idea to have a forum for the migration from Alpha to Itanium? I think it would be for OpenVMS specificaly, since Tr64 will be incorporated in HP-UX for IA64, they may need such a forum as well.

For "Forum" read "category within this forum". (same applyes to TRU64 forum - giving it a category "Porting to HP-UX on IA64" or likewise)

Willem,
in Italy, on September 29th will be a little meeting about migration from alpha to IA64. I'll go there but I think you have a big big idea.
Also, because most of (top) user in vms forum are in Europe I guess HP can prepare a european meeting about this; I agree if will be in Nederland or Uunited Kingdoom.

Interex NL organizes DutchWorld in October and the Technical Update Days on 8.2 will be incorporated in that event. Not the best idea? Perhaps there wil be a real HP event on this in a centralized European location, I don't know. But that will definitely be a good idea as well.

Contact HP on this? I'd hoped that the moderator reads this and takes appropiate action! That's why I posted it here, and the more support from forum members, the better.

If you look at the OpenVMS forum directory page, high up there is a little window
"Jump to.."
The LAST entry in the pulldown menu is
"Forum issues"

I think you should express your hope there, and I guess your chances of picking the right person are much greater.

Thank you for your suggestion for an IA64 Migration forum. I have passed this along to the Forums team who will work with the TRU64 moderators to see if this is a viable option. I will be monitoring this thread for additional comments and support for the idea.

the forum should also cover migration from VAX to Itanium too, obviously.

Now that the 8.2 SDK is available anyone could buy a rx1600 with no operating system and run vms (theorectically). This may encourage smaller companies to port or even try vms on a cheaper platform.

You can buy an SDK for 8.2 today: see http://www.hp.com/products1/evolution/alpha_retaintrust/openvms/integrity-ready.html The SDK supports the rx1600, rx2600, and rx4640, according to that page.

Although most testing/development is using rx2600 there is also testing on rx1600 and the rx4640. The qualification testing that goes on in hp is comprehensive and in depth. The rx1600 is one of the three systems supported by V8.2 - stick with the recommended config and you will be fine. I look forward with hope to the announcement of vms pricing for these systems.
