sftp in batch

I need to send files over an sftp connection from a VMS box to another system (not VMS), and need to do so in a commandprocedure (probably in batch). It is found far less straight forward than plain FTP, it's much less forgiving for errors.
I would like to know answers on questions like: how to specify a pasword (if any), what commands must be used etc.
An simple example would be very helpful

Colleague found the information helpful but not suiting his situation. He will experiment around it.
