Structure of OpenVMS

Hi All,

Can anyone help me in getting the structure of OpenVMS? For an examble the UNIX is structured as HARDWARE-KERNEL-SHELL like that.

Hi,

Welcome to VMS.

Basically, VMS is a layered operating system. At the heart, you have the VMS kernel, performing basic functions, such as scheduling, memory management, interrupt handling, and I/O. The next layer (executive) is basically file management (RMS). The user interface (CLI = DCL) is handled in the next layer (supervisor). The outermost layer is where all (normal) user-written software executes.
In addition to this layered structure, VMS is highly modular making it easier to maintain & change (part of) the OS.

Especially the books by Ruth Goldenberg about the "internals & data structures" of VMS are very interesting.

Ruth Goldenberg's Internals and Data Structures series is certainly a good start, as Chris has stated.

The basics of the structure is also covered in the documentation set, which is available on the www via the HP OpenVMS www site.

There have also been a variety of good descriptions of the basic OpenVMS structure in various long-published handbooks from Digital, back in the pre-Compaq days.

There are also some descriptions in the IEEE and ACM literature, which is available online on various bases.

Oh, the 'family' is just a term they use in these itrc forums. If you look at the link for 'openvms' between 'IT Recourse forums' and 'networking' on top of this reply you'll see:

Tru64 would be family 280, Linux 118,...
Just starting places for related sub-groups, not groups of related people. Sorry.

There are two other sources for OpenVMS community I'd like to recommend.

There is a news group comp.os.openvms
There is also a user group on
Eisner.decus.org
You can get an account with Encompasserve,
what used to be DECUS forum.

It is free. Log in and request an account.
There are what are known as note conferences. There is an excellent signal to noise ratio.
