Our Network Analyst decided that we needed to subnet out the different groups in our department. Once in a new subnet, our Windows workstations (mostly xp) can no longer broadcast to locate a Pathworks license server. WINS still works but I've been trying to retire this and utilize DNS for name resolution. Is it possible for the Pathworks licensing agent to use DNS or is it WINS/LMHOST or nothing?

I'm not a VMS expert and unfortunately our VMS admin doesn't know much about Microsoft products so I apologize if my question isn't clear or if I'm leaving out anything.

Our environment consists of Alpha OpenVMS V7.3-2 and Advanced Server 7.3.

Regards

Rick,
do you have multiple standalone (non-clustered) OpenVMS servers running Advanced Server? If not, I would switch to server-based licensing. In that case you don't need any additional software on the client PC.

Oh, and I have no input into the configuration of our existing VMS environment. It has been implied that there will be no changes to it and that this is a Windows issue. Basically, a change in our licensing scheme is not a possibility at this time.

If those two standalone servers do not provide file/ printer sharing, then I'd migrate to server-based licensing for the reasons I have already stated.

Hi Rick,
pleased to meet you.
Advanced Server, formerly Pathwork, can use either wins or lmhost. I never used them and I'm not able to help you how make the configuration. The command to get on with the transports is
$ ADMIN/CONFIG
then select the transport button.

Basically licence server can use three kinds of transports: tcp/ip, decnet and netbios.
If wins or lmhost lets down you can enable netbeui transport on every PC and license server. Even if works, netbeui supplies a bit of overload traffic on network therefore it is not glad by network administrators.

Antonio Vigliotti
