Yes, FTP or Samba. Perhaps.

It might help to know the operating system
on the PC, and, if you have any TCP/IP
package installed on the VAX, which one.

Finding a Samba version old enough to work on
VMS V5.5-1 may not be easy.

If your PC is running Windows of some sort,
you might look at SmartFTP. Not all Windows
FTP client programs work well with a VMS FTP
server. I haven't tried it lately, but:

http://www.smartftp.com/

TCP/IP is not part of VMS. There are several
different products available to add TCP/IP
to VMS (and there were even more of them back
when V5.5-1 was new).

HP offers its TCPIP product (formerly known
as UCX). Process Software (process.com)
offers two, MultiNet and TCPware. A product
called PathWay (formerly WIN/TCP) was also
available, years ago.

Do you have any of these installed (or even
licensed) already? "SHOW LOGICAL *TCP*" may
tell you something.

It may take some effort now to find anything
compatible with VMS V5.5-1.

You might also try "SHOW LOG UCX*", which might show you that the DEC TCP/IP stack is installed. The logicals starting with TCP didn't come until much later.

You might also try a command of "MULTINET" from the command prompt.

I have the distribution kit for UCX for V5.5-2, it'll probably work on V5.5-1.

saman,

Before going throught the work of installing and configuring TCP/IP on the VAX, please consider using C-KERMIT over the serial port.

Presumably you have a VAX system that is not very well supported.

It is very easy to get into a bad situation when doing major software installations on old, unmaintained systems. Using C-KERMIT means simply running a non-privileged program, which does not make any ongoing changes to the running system (In fact, I have often used C-KERMIT on systems where I did not have the privileges to install products).

The transfer speed of a serial line may not seem attractive, but you can move a fair amount of data with a little patience.

- Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.com

It looks like UCX V3.3 should be compatible. The big question is, do you have a UCX or NET-APP-SUP-xxx license?

If not, the kit will not do you any good...
Bob and I posted about the same time. I agree with him - you probably don't have a good backup of your current system, and installing UCX is going to require that you increase various system resources. If you run Kermit, you don't have to do anything special.

I have a version of Kermit that runs on VMS V5.5-2. It probably works on V5.5-1, too.

The best way to do this is to find a copy of reflection (www.wrq.com)
This includes a procedure that uploads a simple comms program (wrquploa.mar), compiles it, and then uses it to transfer vaxlink.exe up the line.
You can then use reflection to copy files in a similar manner to kermit.
Phil
