To All: Thank you for your help, especially the clarification that Multinet is still alive and kicking.

The replies that most piqued my curiosity were the ones asking if my version of VMS already has telnet functionality... how do I determine if I have a NAS 200 license or UCX 2.0? I tried the link to the SPD's, but didn't see how it answered that question.

Thanks again, everyone. This is a great forum.

Eric Lorgus

We are running VMS V5.5-2HW on a MicroVax 3100-80, without support (turnkey vendor long gone). As far as I can tell, we do not have telnet on this machine, and I've heard that "Multinet" was a third-party package that could add that functionality. All I can find on Multinet is that it was originally marketed by TGV, who was then acquired by Cisco in 1996. Cisco's website says the product is no longer sold.

My requirement is that I want to be able to connect to VAX via TCP/IP, for both in-office and remote access. Presently, most users are running Multiview 2000 (term emulator) on W2K PC's, while the rest still have old VT420's -- but all are connected via serial.

I would also love to find a new VAX/VMS guru. We are in Downingtown, PA (1 hr. west of Phila).

Thank you,
Eric Lorgus
Great Valley Industries
You can also get a UCX license from HP and use their product. If you have a NAS 200 or higher PAK, I believe you have UCX licensed. See http://h18000.www1.hp.com/info/spd/#SPD_N for complete details if your system has an NAS license.

On older systems with small amounts of memory, I recall adding memory to support UCX/TCPIP when we moved away from terminal servers.

Andy
Sunny San Diego

Eric - Welcome to the forums!

I came from a shop running VMS 6.2 (upgraded from 5.5-2H4) on MicroVAX 3100-85 systems. We used Multinet for our TCPIP stacks (initially from TGV, then Cisco, then Process Software). We were always very satisfied with the product.

One very inexpensive product you may want to take a look at is CMU-Tek (from Carnegie-Mellon). I believe you have to send a request via email for the program and then pay a minimal license fee (but support would be an issue).

There are many of us here in the forums who would be interested in being your new guru. Are you talking about in-house, or just as needed?

Allan in Atlanta
As far I can remember there was UCX 2.0 in layered products distributed with VMS 5.5.
Not much modern TCP/IP features, but enough for telnet and ftp.
And as said before, if you have NAS 200 license, you can run it without additional license.

For sites that don't have/can't afford a TCP/IP stack, I install a cheap Linux box with DECnet and LAT software. Users then telnet into the Linux box, and are routed to the VAX. Painless and inexpensive.

If you need on-site support, I'm just a few hours away. I can also work remotely.

And, if you'd like to migrate that VAX to a virtual VAX with new hardware, check out:

http://www.stanq.com/charon-vax.html

[Shameless Plug Alert (tm) -- I an a CHARON-VAX reseller.]
> [...] how do I determine if I have a
> NAS 200 license or UCX 2.0?

"SHOW LICENSE" and look for UCX or
NET-APP-SUP-xxx (where "xxx" is a number like
"200" or more). (NAS = NET-APP-SUP.)

"LICENSE LIST" shows related but possibly
different data. ("HELP ...".)

If you have an NAS PAK, see also:

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/wizard/wiz_1303.html

(A Google search for "NAS PAK" reveals all.
Adding "vms OR openvms" reduces the noise.)

Strictly speaking, of course, the license is
an agreement with DEC/Compaq/HP, while a PAK
is what lets the software work. You can
have one or the other or both or neither.
An arangement which includes the license is
legal, while one which includes the PAK will
be useful.
