Hi

I have an Alpha ES40 with 4GB of memory we are just about to get an additional 4GB can anyone help or point me in the direction of any relevant documents of what i have to do after it has been installed??

Peter,
The Syntax to run Autogen is as follows

@sys$update:Autogen [start-phase] [end-phase] [execution-mode]

In your case, i would suggest that you run

@sys$update:Autogen getdata savparams feedback

Should i run autogen as soon as i bring the system back up with the new memory or shall i run it after say 24hrs of the system being in use??

If i were you, i would run it once after the system comes back up after the memory upgrade and again after some stipulated period and then based on the feedback will make the necessary changes

The syntax for running AUTOGEN is:

@SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN [start] [end] [exec]

See information when executing
@SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN HELP

I always make sure that the SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT file contains reasonable values and execute
@SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN SAVPARAMS TESTFILES CHECK_FEEDBACK
or
@SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA TESTFILES CHECK_FEEDBACK

I then check the AGEN$PARAMS.REPORT for apparent errors and warnings, and also the SETPARAMS.DAT file for "strange" values.
Then I modify the MODPARAMS.DAT if necessary, and re-run AUTOGEN, until I'm satisfied.

Finally, I run AUTOGEN thus:
@SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA SETPARAMS CHECK_FEEDBACK
and reboot the system at a convenient time.

There is an issue about mixing Stacked and Unstacked memory boards in the ES40. There is usually a flyer that comes with the memory boards that describe the issue.

Hi Peter,

actually you might want to run autogen once before bringing down the box for the memory install, since that should give you a could handle on your current workload and a better start on the new values. This does assume that the system has been up and used for a sufficient period of time.
