If that is totally true it does not look too bad for VMS Engeneering.

Hurd completely reversed that move, fitting with his reputation as someone who delegates authority and makes each business unit responsible for its own fate.

If that only were true, than "all" that is needed is a business unit dedicated to VMS, and thinks look great.

Oh well.

It was also announced that PC sales surged with 15%, 2% more than expected. It's always good (for the manager) to do job cuts when business is improving.

Bad news for those who have options left ...

H-PÂ´s (HPQ) restructuring plan looks solid but job cuts are below some optimistic expectations, UBS says. "Also, we believe some may be surprised that it will take six quarters to implement the plan, which could mean less of an earnings benefit in FY06 than expected," the broker says. Goldman Sachs says the headcount reductions are inline with expectations and probably fully reflected in the stock, "capping upside near term."

Pardon me for playing devil's advocate:
even if there were no job cuts in OVMS eng. (which I can't beleive - how many are left these days from that 400 person number I've heard many years ago?), I think looking at that department only is a bit short-sighted.

What is an OS without server hardware? Not many 3rd-party storage is even remotely compatible with VMS! Who is going to |support| the customers?

so 30,000 high tech jobs gone - not good.

what surprises/annoys/irks/doesn't surprise me, is that these folk still run in relation to the metric of revenue per employee and compare themselves to Dell.

Reality Check, mr hurd. 1. Don't compare to Dell, they just assemble boxes, their investment in R&D is minimal, there is a point at which they will burn out. Don't kill the company by trying to mimic them, while they do.

2. There are two sides to the revenue per employee ratio. Reducing employees has been tried, and tried, and tried. Consider raising revenue instead - now there is an idea.

How?
Raising prices = loss of even more jobs since competition can do the same for less.
VMS on non_HP = loss of even more jobs since "no-one" will use it due to high price, lack of applications and non-marketing.
VMS on IA32 = loss of even more jobs, for the very same reason.

When will managers (and directors) give the good example and be happy with half of it?
When will shareholders look further tahn their own wallets?

14,500 people can create a little town.
14,500 people and their families are about 30,000..40,000 people with money trouble.
They are a town.
With IBM employes are a lot of people with bad thinks.

I'm amazed, surprised, stupefied by IT managers that are convinced give the same quality to customer. They can saving money but don't keep good customer service.

On the pother hand, there always fat in the organization that can be cut without any problem. Some say it can even be 50% ...

Just hope they cut the fat and not the (old) meat.

My guess is that VMS will live on in some special high-end niches and at some customers who have locked-in applications or who are too inert to 'migrate off'.

The advantage for the VMSers is that few youngsters are going to learn it (certainly not at school). That only leaves the existing people who are decreasing in number because of (early) retirements, move to other platforms, move to management positions, etc.

And the VMS applications will be there for a long time.

So, the best IT job in town ?
