Geir,
I just finished setting up a DS700 connected to a VMS system. First things first. Make sure your serial cable plugged into the console port is pinned properly. Poor pinning or wrong cables will cause the errant "smiley" on your screen.

Second, be sure the Ethernet connection you're plugging into is bridging LAT and DecNet to your VMS server/cluster. If it's not, you'll never be able to boot the DecServer. I recently had to move all of my DecServers into my datacenter due to new IP routing techniques taken by my company. (long story here...)

Third, I've found the DS700's to be inconsistent when it comes to the error codes on the 7 seg dis. So long as you have power, good connection to VMS and a (verified) good terminal connection to the console port, the DecServer should boot and you should be seeing the whole process on the console port.

Verify the following:
GOOD CABLE FOR CONSOLE MONITORING
1- DecServer has been added to as a valid server in TSM.
2- LATCP and/or TSM can connect to DS700 using MAC address.
3- See error codes on console port.

Let me know if you need help pinning a CAT5 cable to a DB9. I'll send pinning.

JohnL
Hi,

I have problem to configure a DECserver 7xx. As far as I know the LAT is configured on a OpenVMS system, and later the configuration files is transffered to LAT through MOP protocol.

So far, no problem. But the LED lamp on the Terminalserver is blinking all time. I tried to set up a config file for the LAT on OpenVMS, and connect the cable to it, without success. I also tried to reboot the VMS and Terminalserver, without success. At end I think that I should try to connect a PC to console port on the Terminalserver (Hyperterm with standard configs). No success.

Is the someone that could help me?

Thanks

Geir

Hello
You do not have to reboot OpenVMS for such a thing.
But is your DECserver booted? Where do you boot DECserver from?
By default DECserver must "see" LAT services if any (when operational).
Do you have some "requesting load" messages on VMS console?

Hi Geir,
reading your post I understand your DecServer 7xx has to load image form VMS machine; on port 1 you should see all diagnostics messages.
If is it true, you have a image file on one vms server, for example MENGx.SYS (you can know exact file name form port 1).
Then you have to enable service on network.
For example, suppose file is MNENG3.SYS, you could:
1) Check for image file
$ DIR MOM$LOAD:MNENG3.SYS
(You can see all images in this directory)
2) Enable service (via Decnet IV)
$ MC NCP
SET CIRC <CIRC> SERVICE ENABLE
DEF CIRC <CIRC> SERVICE ENABLE
SHOW CIRC <CIRC> CHAR
3) Connect a terminal to port 1 and reset DecServer.

Antonio Vigliotti
</CIRC></CIRC></CIRC>

Geir,

you name DECserver 7xx.
That gives the first ambuigity: some servers in the 7xx series have internal firmware, some need a remote load.

If you connect a VT (or Terminal Emulator) tp Port_1, and then power up the server, you should get some info.
Also the red LEDs should display a countdown. To where does that come?

If you need for a LOAD file (depending on the DECserver type) do you have MOP or LANCP DLL activated? ( DLL is DownLineLoad, and NOT the M$ acronym!)

Enough questions, please provide the answers, and we will take it from there.

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe

You need to have a particular file in your MOM$LOAD directory- It'll either be WWENG1.SYS or WWENG2.SYS, if memory serves me correctly.

As it goes through the boot/load process, a DECserver 700 displays different things in a seven-segment display that's over by the ethernet connectors.

I am attaching a .pdf that's the page from the DECserver 700 manual that has the 7-segment LED sequences.

Hope this helps,

WWWebb

What is flashing? OK LED? Seven-segment display? Accordingly to my book:
- System OK LED Off/Seven-Segment Display Flashing - A hardware error occurred that makes the DECserver 700 nonoperational.
- If the System OK LED is flashing after power up, it indicates that the DECserver 700
has a nonfatal problem detected during self-test. The error message on the console
terminal shows the primary problem.
Are your terminal on 1st port configured 9600,8,n,1?

It's quite detailled regarding troubleshooting procedures...

To reset the DECserver 700 to factory defaults, unplug the power cord. Then keep the Reset button pressed, WHILE you re-insert the power cord, still keep the reset button pressed in and wait until 'E' shows up on the display. Also look at your terminal for messages... maybe the seven-segment display is also bad ?!

After 1-2 minutes, I would give up and declare the DECserver 700 dead ;-(

Volker.

I just had another thought.

Are you sure that the Ethernet connection you're connecting to is active?

DECserver 700s have two Ethernet connections-
10BaseT and AUI.

There's a very small silver switch in between the two Ethernet connections which selects which one is active.

If you look closely you'll see little lines on the back of the DECserver indicating which switch position points at which Ethernet connector.

WARNING: DO NOT FLIP THIS SWITCH WHILE THE TERMINAL SERVER IS POWERED UP OR CONNECTED TO ETHERNET OR YOU MIGHT KILL THE DECSERVER!
Geir,

from your Forum Profile:

<QUOTE>
I have assigned points to 70 of 117 responses to my questions.
</QUOTE>

Maybe you can find some time to do some assigning?

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
Consider, that every poster took at least the trouble of posting for you!

To easily find your streams with unassigned points, click your own name somewhere.
This will bring up your profile.
Near the bottom of that page, under the caption â My Question(s)â you will find â questions or topics with unassigned points â Clicking that will give all, and only, your questions that still have unassigned postings.

Thanks on behalf of your Forum colleagues.

PS. â nothing personal in this. I try to post it to everyone with this kind of assignment ratio in this forum. If you have received a posting like this before â please do not take offence â none is intended!

Proost.

Have one on me.

Jan
