Hi all,
In the VMS world we are used to upgrades being rather simple and trustworthy.
We keep riddling the PC collegues with there problems in that.
But I never expected this:
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=988120
Special attention for the remark by Steven Protter:
<QUOTE>
Universally upgrade-ux is a bad idea that fails a significant percentage of the time. 50% failure rate is not unusual.
</QUOTE>
To me, this comes as a culture shock I never expected.

Just goes to show how exceptional VMS REALLY is.
What we take for granted obviously is not so common to others!

Happy New Year
Happy VMS

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe

The worst problem I've had with an operating system upgrade on a VMS server is finding someplace that's open to have a late supper.

The idea that your have need to reload your applications and licenses after an "upgrade" seems odd. What's the difference between upgrade and new installation?

Andy

Ed, Andy,
yeah, that is what I thought

Wim,
you are right of course, but the real aspects of the difference are nicely summed up by Andy.

But, if the validating of both is supervised by the same QA rulings, I _DO_ understand why QA sometimes seems to be slipping since DEC days (especially for ported software)!

Engeneering: please maintain (or better: raise) YOUR standards!

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe
