VMS Patch Kit Content Access Issues and Possible Corruption?

I downloaded 12 VMS patch kits from HP Web sites recently (in prep for planned Alpha VMS v7.2-1 to V7.3-2 cluster upgrade) and was able to expand them on my VMS systems (to extract related PCSI kits) but can only access 7 of the 12 kit contents to Extract Release Notes or List the kits via related PRODuct commands (see attached). The checksums for at least some of the problem kits are correct but I'm concerned I won't be able to install needed kits so I'm perplexed. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

Just a guess (no system at hand to check), but maybe VMS V7.2-1 misses some functionality in the PCSI system , that V7.3-2 has.

It appears that you need a more recent version of PCSI. VMS731_PCSI-V0100 added the undo functionality for 7.3. I don't know if there was an equivalent for 7.2. If not you'll have to install all those that contain undo logic after you've upgraded and installed your VMS732_PCSI-V0300.

FYI, the first kit I'm planning to install is the PCSI kit you mentioned (I was also hoping that may do the trick but concerned that other VMS V7.3-2 kits are accessible in my VMS V7.2-1 system now: expect all/none).

On the issue of the patch kit problems, at least some of those kits show VMS732_PCSI V2.0/3.0 as a prerequisite, so they were probably built using a later version of PCSI.

You will need to either download the release notes direct from the itrc site, or else unpack the kits on a V7.3-2 kit with the current PCSI patch.

Thank you all for your help...I plan to assign points to replies once I can. The replies make sense and definitely help alieve most of my concerns on this.

Not necessarily all or none. Check out the prerequisites in the kit descriptions. Those that depend on a V732 PCSI or UPDATE kit will probably be unreadable on a V721 system.

In particular, the errors you've posted involve the "undo" feature which was implemented in V7.3-2, so it's no surprise it doesn't work on V7.2-1.

After upgrading, install the latest PCSI kit, then the latest UPDATE kit, then reboot. You should then be able to install all subsequent kits.

If you still have problems, don't panic! Your system is in a stable state (albeit not quite up to rev). Log a case with your local customer support centre to deal with the exact symptoms on the correct OS version, rather than trying to guess based on symptoms from the wrong OS version.

Yes, thanks John...that's exactly what I planned to do. FYI, I discussed this with HP staff but they were unable to confirm the cause (even when I suggested possibility of current PCSI limits) so Thanks to You All!

You should logout and in again after installing the PCSI update - or else update the CLI tables - before attempting to install any kits that depend on it ...

I wish the different versions of
extracting the release notes had occured
to me....

The only sure way to safely create the new
psci files is to do it on the current version. It might work, probably will, but than it might not.
