Michael,

DECevent (most recent version is V3.4, development has stopped years ago) is for and runs on OpenVMS VAX and OpenVMS Alpha only. Machine-specific error translation and analysis support on Alpha is limited to EV5 or early EV6 systems. DECevent will still do fine translating e.g. SCSI errors on more recent Alpha systems.

Starting with Alpha DS10/GS80 system, you would need to use SEA (System Event Analyzer), which is part of WEBES, to translate or analyze system related errors.

For OpenVMS I64, only SEA/WEBES can be used for errlog translation and analysis. V4.4.4 is current and can be downloaded from the Analysis Service Tools page:

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/svctools/

ANAL/ERR/ELV (part of base OpenVMS since V7.3-2 and on OpenVMS I64), will only do errorlog translation, but it does not recognize most HW-related errors, so it's pretty useless - sorry to have to say that.

Volker.

We have an Alpha/OVMS client who will be migrating to Integrity/OVMS. Can you tell me the status of DECevent within the new environment? The same for DECforms, FMF, and SMG?

Thanks!

You can find the status of all layered products at

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/os/swroll/VIROL.HTML

SMG is part of the OS, so "it's in there". With v8.x of OpenVMS, the Error Log Viewer is included in the OS (Analyze /Error /ELV), which can perform the functions of Diagnose/Translate, and it's wicked fast...

Presuming you meant FMS, both of the other 2 items are now available.

Thanks much. So is the functionality the same, better, or different than DecEvent?

That's a real good question -- my very limited experience with it has indicated that it's at least on par with the unlicensed version of DECevent. It's a basic event log dump (or translate) tool.

You should be able to find details in the System Management Utilities Manual (chapter 10):

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/82FINAL/6048/6048pro_027.html#elv_chap

The EventLogViewer (ELF) just translates the binary eventlog to something readable, but has no knowledge of the specific systems.
DECevent has some knowldge of the systems it supports, but these where the older Alphasystems, newer ones were already supported by SEA (System Event Analyzer, see $HELP WSEA, if installed). SEA is part of the WEBES suite.
I think, SEA is the way to go on IA64.
(see info on
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/svctools/)

regards Kalle

Isn't Webes the replacement for decevent?
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/svctools/webes/index.html

I know thats what we are using on the newer Alpha systems and its working just like decevent with alert notifications. I also pull my reports off the web interface instead of producing a log output.
