Rob,

I would suggest to install V7.3-2 onto a local disk first, apply the most recent patches and then copy that local disk to the EVA new system disk (after booting from the V8.2 CD).

Volker.

Trying to boot VMS 7.3-2 from cd to do a new build, the console sees it "$1$dga800" but when I boot VMS from the cd it does not. Any thoughts??

Rob,

a know issue.

Virgin 7.3-2 does not support EVA devices.
So, it is a chicken-and-egg story, but here there IS an escape.
Boot and 8.2 CD, exit to $$$, mount the 7.3-2 CD, and install from there.
Apply the necessary patches (included in UPGRADE_V002, but you will do better with the latest upgrade), and now you can boot a version that supports EVA.

hth

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe

Another option is to install VMS to a supported device, such as scsi or HSG for example, load ECOs and then use backup to move the system drive to the EVA. This being OpenVMS, you could even install to scratch drive on a testing server, create a tape backup and restore on the final platform.

Andy

Jan,

<QUOTE>
Virgin 7.3-2 does not support EVA devices
</QUOTE>

I remember having used a V7.3-2 CD to copy a local disk to a fibre chanel disk. Whether this works, mainly depends on the Fibre Channel Adapters present in the Alpha system. Some of these adapters are not supported with 'virgin' V7.3-2.

If you boot from the CD and don't see PGA and FGA devices, then the system can't configure your Fibre Channel adapter (KGPSA-xx) and you can't see your EVA disks.

Volker.
