Have a look in VMS FAQ where you can find the update paths:

http://h71000.www7.hp.com/faq/vmsfaq_008.html#mgmt16

regards Kalle
You also need to check any third party products such as Oracle for example to see which versions are supported with which operating system version.

Recent versions of VMS have improved performance and reduced overhead, extending the life of many older systems in place. Each configuration of course has the potential to be different.

Andy

Hello,

From my point of view all server could be upgraded to a higher version of OpenVMS.
I run OpenVMS V8.2 on a Digital Personal Workstation without an problems.

It is important to consider at least these items:
- installed memory
=> refer to the OpenVMS SPD
=> on the Doc CD
- installed options and OpenVMS support
=> refer to:
HP OpenVMS Vn.n Upgrade & Installation
Guide
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/doc/os83_index.html
- application, is the application able to
work with a higher version of OpenVMS?

Cheers
Andreas

You should take your VAX system to V7.3, if possible. That's the latest, and destined to be the last version.

The Alpha systems can go to V8.3, which has just been released.

Those versions (VAX 7.3, Alpha 8.3) will cluster quite nicely, if you have a cluster environment.

As others have mentioned, you might be dependent on a specific layered product or 3rd party produce (Oracle, etc.) that prevents you from upgrading. You need to evaluate your environment VERY carefully before doing anything. And make good backups before moving forward.

[Shameless Plug Alert(tm) -- I am a CHARON reseller] Your systems are very old, and are candidates for migration to CHARON, or upgrade to new hardware. For details, see:

http://www.stanq.com/charon-vax.html
http://www.stanq.com/charon-alpha.html
