Hello,

The Browser service of advanced server is in a
'start pending' state. Recycling Advanced Server did not resolve the problem. We're running OpenVMS 7.3-2. See attached error when trying to run an application.

Thanks!

-Pete
Pete,

Advanced Server 7.3B fixes several problems that cause the Browser service to stay in a start pending state. Occurs on both standalone systems and clusters.

Bill

The Advanced Server V7.3B kit is in
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/openvms_patches/layered_products/alpha/

but I noticed today that it has been renamed to have a leading dot - this is usually done when the kit is superceeded or on hold. I await news...

Ian,

The kit was listed on the VMS Alpha 7.3-2, 8.2 and 8.3 patch web pages yesterday. I think I'm scheduled to install it on a couple of clusters this weekend.

Pete,

The Browser service publishes and resolves netbios names on the network. When it doesn't work, your client application can't find the server(s) or service(s) it needs out on the network.

According to engineering, there is no known problem with that V7.3B kit. Apparently there is something funky going on with ITRC itself, causing some kits to get that preceeding "dot".

>But here's a real dumb question.
>
>In layman's terms, what is the browser >service? What is it's function ???

In layman's terms? It is the service that is responsible for the list of servers in the Network Neighborhood. No Browser running on your local subnet means no computers visible in Network Neighborhood.

I think a log of Advanced Server customers disable the Browser service and let a Microsoft box handle that work.

(In fact, there are *no* Alpha 8.3 patches listed.) I only see it at the FTP site, and it's dotted out there.

I was planning to do this update, too, but I think I'll wait a bit in spite of Brad and Dave's positive comments.
Pete,

from your Forum Profile:

<QUOTE>
I have assigned points to 0 of 26 responses to my questions.
</QUOTE>

Maybe you can find some time to do some assigning?

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/helptips.do?#33

Mind, I do NOT say you necessarily need to give lots of points. It is fully up to _YOU_ to decide how many. If you consider an answer is not deserving any points, you can also assign 0 ( = zero ) points, and then that answer will no longer be counted as unassigned.
Consider, that every poster took at least the trouble of posting for you!

To easily find your streams with unassigned points, click your own name somewhere.
This will bring up your profile.
Near the bottom of that page, under the caption "My Question(s)" you will find "questions or topics with unassigned points " Clicking that will give all, and only, your questions that still have unassigned postings.

Thanks on behalf of your Forum colleagues.

PS. - nothing personal in this. I try to post it to everyone with this kind of assignment ratio in this forum. If you have received a posting like this before - please do not take offence - none is intended!

PPS. - Zero points for this.

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe

Thanks everyone! We're going to hold off on the Pathhworks upgrade for now, because most of the fixes apply to a clustered environment anyway. But we did decide to disable the browser service.

Turned out the home grown application was the problem from the very beginning. Somebody deleted a configuration file. I hate when that happens......

Thanks again!
