disk backup to cd

We have 3 alpha systems my question is ,How to make take system disk backup in to CD rom . Is it possible to boot the system from CD rom like tape catridge.

Is there any other layered product available for write CD in openvms

You can boot OpenVMS from the OpenVMS Operating System CD.

The CDRECORD software is available in OpenVMS since V7.3-1, V8.3 added the COPY/RECORDABLE_MEDIA command. In both cases, you need a CD/DVD writer to be connected to your OpenVMS Alpha system.

Alternatively you can use the LD utility and burn the CD/DVD using your favourite burning tool on another operating system.

Your question is not very clear to me. What,
exactly, would you like to do?

As usual, it would help to know your OS
version(s).

If you expect BACKUP to write directly to a
CD-R/RW disc instead of a tape, then you're
probably doomed to disappointment. Note that
the capacity of a CD is around 650MB. How
many MB do you need/expect to be writing?

how to take the system diks image backup into DVD ?. A critical situation ( like system disk boot block failure) i was boot the system from the DVD and restore the data in to system disk (is it possible ???).

One more question
how create the common disk environment in openvms.??
I was try the answer from openvms docs but I cant find it ..

Ok. That part was clear.

BACKUP does not write to CDs or DVDs. If you
have the disk space, you could use BACKUP to
save the system disk to a (big) BACKUP save
set on another disk, and, if that save set
will fit onto a CD or DVD (perhaps after
compressing it), then there is software
available which should be able to write that
save set to a CD or DVD.

You can boot the VMS installation CD and run
BACKUP from that to restore a BACKUP save set
onto a new disk when the old one dies.
(Reversing any compression may add complexity
and/or a requirement for more available disk
space.)

That part's not so clear. It's all done with
logical names? What do you want to know? If
you use BACKUP /IMAGE to save the system disk
and restore it, everything should just work.

i got the clear idea in the backup ..

My second question is
How to create the common disk environment, That is Boot the systems ( for example 3 systems) from common storage disk.

The operating system is openvms 7.3-2.

Then, probably:

Are the systems are already clustered (so you
have the required licenses)?

As usual, some useful information might be
useful, like: what kind of Alpha systems, how
they are connected, how the disks are
connected, and so on.
