Next, read the excellent online help.
On you VMS system type in and study:

$ HELP
$ HELP HINTS
$ HELP HINTS COMMAND
$ HELP DCL

If you get the chance goto the Users' group meeting. If nothing else its networking with other VMS admins and that can help alot when you want to discuss issues & ideas.

A very good book is :

"Writing Real Programs in DCL"
I have the Second Edition circa 1999
by Paul C. Anagnostopoulos and Steve Hoffman

Digital Press ISBN 1-55558-191-9

To quote the back cover: "Readers will learn the fundamentals of DCL and understand when to use DCL instead of a more conventional programming language."

~$90 CDN a couple of years ago, although a quick search for the ISBN doesn't turn it up.
