Error message System-F-ACCIOV - Openvms v7.32 Alpha

Hi,

I've an issue with OPENVMS ALPHA v7.3-2.
When I ran a dcl command to generate a report or graphs using the file creatd by a 3rd party tool (see below)

$ advise performance graph/type=custom=(device_metrics=(writio,readio,splitio)-

it returned with the following error.

%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=00, virtual address=000000000040

I had tried to increase the pgflquota of my
system account to 6,000,000, doesn't help.

The access violation is an indication of a serious run-time error in or underneath the Advise tool. (Is that the old Capacity Planner tool?)

Looks to be an uninitialized pointer, or a corrupted pointer.

Figuring out what this might be sensitive usually involves access to the source code, or a very careful look at the generated code itself; back-translating the instructions at run-time.

The code involved does look to involve a system call, though that DOES NOT IMPLY A PROBLEM IN THE SYSTEM CALL ITSELF. It is quite common to see errors in system calls secondary to errors in application code.

Check for updates to that tool, and then contact the vendor.

The error:

"%SYSTEM-F-ACCVIO, access violation, reason mask=00, virtual address=000000000040
7FFC, PC=FFFFFFFF808C2378, PS=0000001B"

Means that the application tried to access the address location 40 which is protected by VMS. Typically this error occurs when an argument is incorrectly passed to a subroutine (i.e., the subroutine/function is expecting the argument to be passed by reference and the parent passes it by value). Similar errors also happen when there constants/variables that are not correctly resolved at link time.

I am sure there others that can post more detailed explanations of this error, but hopefully this will help.

if you get an ACCVIO executing the ADVISE command, you would most likely need to contact the 3rd party (CA - last time I checked) providing support for this performance tool.

You can collect additional information about which routine causes the access violation (trying to access virtual address 40) by creating a process dump:

$ set proc/dump
$ advise ...
$ ANAL/PROC xxx.DMP
DBG> SHOW CALL
DBG> EXIT

It looks to me like you are using CA's UnicenterTNG. Two questions,

1. Has this command ever worked for you?

2. Have you contacted CA (or your 3rd party, if not CA) Support?

I remember a problem a couple of years ago where a script I had been using for many years suddenly started producting the same access violation messages. I really dont remember what the solution was, but I am pretty sure it was a CA patch that fixed it.
