Don't use the VGAconsole. It's not supported on V8.3 - however it is supported on V8.3-1H1 (with a few caveats).

Read the installation and upgrade guid carefully about how to configure the console settings for the serial console.

Don't forget to ensre that you have current firmware in the system and in the on-board LSIlogic SAS 8port conroller.

You may find that you have trouble with the V8.3 DVD depending on the make and model of the USB connected DVD drive.

You may be better off using V8.3-1H1 as it has a number of performance and functionality improvements over V8.3. Again, read the new featrues, release notes and installation guides carefully first.

I'm currently working with a number of rx2660s and rx6600s in a couple of new clusters and we're using V8.3-1H1, not V8.3.

Cheers, Colin (http://www.xdelta.co.uk).

I have one RX6600, i am trying to install OpenVMS 8.3. A VGA Monitor is connected to the server. From EFI shell, if i do "boot from DVD", i am getting the error.

ERROR: Canout device path can't be set to multiple devices
Warning: Select console device paths from the boot manager menu.

So, i looked into console configuration.

Two entries are there in the console configuration, VGA and Serial

If VGA is P and and Serial is S, then i am getting the error.

ERROR: Canout device path can't be set to multiple devices
Warning: Select console device paths from the boot manager menu.

If VGA is P and Serial is NC (not configured), then i am getting the error.

ERROR : Unable to fetch console input path variable.

If VGA is S and Serial is P, then i am getting the error.

ERROR: Canout device path can't be set to multiple devices
Warning: Select console device paths from the boot manager menu.

Please anyone tell me, how can i solve this issue and how can i install ?

Hi,

Knowing nothing about the RX6600...
However, we encountered a similar problem with an rx2660. We solved it thus:

(verbatim quote from our homebrewn manuals)

It is necessary to configure the serial console of the Integrity systems, as for VMS the input, output and error console all must point to the same serial-line console device.

At the console of the Integrity systems, select "Boot Configuration" from the "EFI Boot Manager" menu.
From the submenu, select "Console Configuration".
The "Console Configuration" should look like:

Console Configuration
S Serial Acpi(PNP0501,0) Vt100+ 9600
P Serial Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1) Vt100+ 9600
S VGA Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(2|0)

Position the cursor on the first entry and press <ENTER>. Hereby disabling the "system serial port".
Position the cursor on the third entry and press <ENTER>. Hereby disabling the "VGA port". VMS does not support booting using a USB keyboard or a VGA graphics display device.
The final console configuration should look like this:

Console Configuration
NC Serial Acpi(PNP0501,0) Vt100+ 9600
P Serial Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(1|1) Vt100+ 9600
NC VGA Acpi(HWP0002,700)/Pci(2|0)

Save the settings to NVRAM, and reset the system.

(end quote)

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Kris (aka Qkcl)</ENTER></ENTER>
