I'm not quite sure what you're asking here.

I am sure that EFI is not end-user friendly.

Removable media is sorted out ahead of fixed media in the console displays. You'll see partitions related to the DVD device appear and disappear, for instance.

The assignment of fs devices and blk devices are confusingly variable.

Boot aliases are based on GUIDs stored in the partitions, and not on the fs/blk EFI-level devices shown by the console. EFI doesn't "like" true disk image duplicates here as these inherently have duplicate GUIDs assigned, so disk images may not work or may not have the intended result.

If you can (and assuming this is OpenVMS I64), you may want to use the "@SYS$MANAGER:BOOT_OPTIONS" command off the DCL-level access available from the installation DVD menu where you can.

Here is some related documentation:

http://h30266.www3.hp.com/odl/axpos/opsys/vmsos831h1/BA322_90077/apa.html

Or look for the BOOT_OPTIONS.COM material here:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/openvms/doc/AA-PV5MH-TK.PDF

If I've not guessed correctly, please provide a few more words around your question, and around what this (I assume) disk image might be.
