belkacem,

Welcome to the ITRC OpenVMS Forum!

The best (well-phrased) answer to this question is "Ask the Wizard" entry 8096 at http://h71000.www7.hp.com/wizard/wiz_8096.html

Please note the IF IT HAS BEEN CONFIGURED comment in answer, as well as the note to "check the label on the actual hardware".

If is has not been set, the response may very well be a blank string.

I hope that this is helpful.

- Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.com

No Alpha, No VAX and No Itanium has a reliable serial number. Period.

If you'd like to change the serial number returned by the sequence described in this thread, that's easily feasible too.

If this is software licensing, forget it. Use LMF. Do the minimal licensing you need to do, and get back to working on the application.

The official serial number is printed on the sticker that's usually on the box somewhere near the power connection.

backing up up hoff's comment , i've received both reconditioned and fresh from the factory alpha servers with all sorts of entries for the serial number - people/place names etc - best look on the box.
