Hello

ES40 backplane jumper J31 has 3 alternatives:
- pin-1 connected to pin-2
- pin-2 connected to pin-3
- jumper not installed at all

We have all our ES40's configured with alternative #3 - no jumper at all, and then use the following port mapping:

ES40, with jumper J31 removed
MMJ = RMC
OPA0 = lower DB9
TTA0 = Upper DB9
this has worked well for us.

In the default jumper configuration, one port multi-tasks between OPA0 and RMC.

Hope this helps!
ITRC dropped the first posting attempt; this is a re-post. Apologies on any duplicates that might appear.

For how to connect (via the COM1 port) and how to use and manage the RMC, please read the technical manuals for the boxes.

The AlphaServer ES40 manual is here:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/archive/es40/es40_tech.html

In the above, the RMC is chapter 6, and the jumper is page 6-26.

Here's the AlphaServer ES45 box:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/es45/es45_tech.html

Here's the previous thread on this topic:

http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1335210

Here's a general write-up on the RMC for one of these boxes.

http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/445

As an alternative toward advancing your career and your skills, consider calling in some (more) experienced help here or talk to your manager about obtaining some guidance and for access to whatever training might be available here; you're quite clearly not getting the detailed level of assistance that seems needed here in ITRC.

And I strongly discourage altering any of the RMC thermal protection settings -- outside of a life-critical override or similar environment, that is.
