I am fairly new to vms and have a question concerning an error which causes our backups to fail.

The error is :

xx:xx:xx COORD: -Line = 156, File = RESD$:[SRC]CATAPI_C_SHOW_CATALOG.C;1
xx:xx:xx COORD: ABS_NO_CATLG, The catalog does not exist
xx:xx:xx COORD: -Line = 112, File = RESD$:[SRC]CATAPI_S_SHOW_CATALOG.C;1
xx:xx:xx COORD: ABS_NO_CATLG, The catalog does not exist
xx:xx:xx COORD: -%RMS-E-FNF, file not found

Can anyone explain me what this error is about?

Carlo,

I don't know anything about ABS, but the message is "The catalog does not exist"

It could mean that the directory [SRC] doesn't exist. The pointer to the physical location is missing. You can still see the filename, but you can't use it.

If you know the diskname, try

$ ANAL/DISK 'diskname'

Hakan

I have done some further investigation myself.

The logical points to an empty directory.

Any files that should have been in there have been removed. I suspect they were removed by someone doing a purge on the system.

Carlo,

>>>
I suspect they were removed by someone doing a purge on the system.
<<<

VERY unlikely. PURGE lets (at least) ONE version of each file remaining.
Much more likely, the file was deleted or moved.

Has this ABS functioned correctly before, or is the configuration perhaps not yet completed?
Has the system been changed recently (moved, restored, Logical Names reDEFINEd, ... ) ??

More info increses the chance that we might be able to help better.

Proost.

Have one on me.

jpe

Carlo,

ABS is looking for the ABS catalogs using the logical name ABS$CATALOG.

- did someone change that logical ?
- did the system reboot prceeding the failure ?
- has the location of the catalog files changed and noone updated the logical name definition in ABS$SYSTARTUP.COM ?

Note: RESD$:[SRC] is the file name of the ABS source file directory used when building ABS from sources ! It has nothing to do with any directory on your system.

Volker.

It might also be that ABS only gets strarted on a restricted number of nodes in a cluster, and you might not be logged in to one of these nodes.

Craig

Carlo,

it seems that by default the logical ABS$CATALOG should point to ABS$ROOT:[CATALOG].

Has the system been booted between the time of the last successful backup and the time of the failure ? Check with WRITE SYS$OUTPUT F$GETSYI("BOOTTIME")

Do you have a backup of the disk, which ABS$CATALOG points to ? You could at least check for files in that directory present in that saveset.

Volker.
