ricoh 6000 printers using vms7.3-2 and dcps

We are currently running vms 7.3-2 and have 3 ricoh 6000 printers that the users would like to be able to print to. So far, I can connect to the printer, but it times out without responding. I have not having any problems using a 4000 MP printer. So far I don't see where its documented as a printer that runs with dcps. Any suggestions on how I can get these printers to work. We are running DCPS DCPS_ECO3 V2.6

Does DCPS_ECO3 V2.6 do RPCS or PCL? It
probably can do PostScript. Do your printers
have the PostScript option?

I checked a c.o.v. message posted last fall concerning a Ricoh 6000 MP. Following was my suggestion then, (and now).

We have many Ricoh's using DCPS, but not that model.

Some things to check:

- Make sure PostScript mode is set to TBCP (Set through web interface)
- Make sure bidirectional communication is turned on (Set through telneting
to printer and doing a msh> diprint bidirect on)

DCPS can print PCL files, as well as other formats, but requires a printer that has a PostScript interpreter.

If the Ricoh 6000 printer does not have the PostScript option installed, you can't use DCPS to print to it.

DCPS V2.7 is the latest supported version, you can consider upgrading to this version.

Support for Ricoh 6000 Aficio MP is not added to DCPS. But DCPS should print do basic printing, if the printer has postscript support. If the problem is observed using DCPS TCP print queue, could you use DCPS LPD print queue.

I did set this up using lpd.

I will check about getting the upgrade downloaded.

I will have the printer team check on both the postscript component and the other settings on the printer itself.

If you go outside what's listed in the DCPS SPD, you're going to use a legacy Unix printing path, or you'd better make sure you have a Postscript printer and some time to test and the budget to "be wrong" about whether the printer will actually work (or not) via the DCPS unrecognized-printer mechanisms, or even via lpr/lpd or other ASCII-based printing.

DCPS will not work with the Ricoh Aficio MP 6000 series printer.

This is not a Postscript printer.

What text Ketan was looking at is unclear, but following a few links around at the Ricoh site will find a requirement for an add-on OS-specific driver to get Postscript or Postscript emulation to work. Some research indicates this is not hardware or firmware installed into the printer but packaged as a driver for specific operating systems, which generally means the Postscript is host-based, which generally means "no VMS compatibility".

HP DCPS and other HP VMS software also lack support for HP PCL, which means you're limited to a queue relayed through a box with support for the printer, or ASCII-based printing using lpd or analogous paths.

You might get IPP with a third-party IP stack, but not AFAIK with TCP/IP Services stack.

Many low-cost and non-departmental printers now or will use host-rendering schemes, as are a few of the mid- and upper-end printers. HP has various similar printers here; where the host performs conversions and rendering in what printer vendors call a "driver". These printers will generally not work with VMS, nor with various flavors of Unix, HP-UX, Solaris or Linux.
