J3591A Secure Web Console replacement

We are looking for console connectivity over the network for an old HP 9000/800/K380. I know the easy solution is to pick up a J3591A Secure Web Console via eBay, but company policy prohibits this. Does anybody know of a current solution that can be used in place of the older web console?

Also, is anybody aware of known issues using a modern serial KVM with older HP serverrs?

Suppose you're looking to enable console connectivity over the network for an older HP 9000/800/K380 system and can't use the discontinued J3591A Secure Web Console due to company policy. In that case, there are still viable modern alternatives. Essentially, you need a solution that allows serial-to-network access, enabling remote interaction with the system console. Enterprise-grade serial console servers, such as those offered by HPE or Perle (like the IOLAN series), are specifically designed for this purpose and offer robust features, including SSH access, encryption, and multi-port scalability. If cost or scale is a concern, a smaller single-port serial-to-IP device or even a DIY solution using a Raspberry Pi with a USB-to-RS232 adapter running software like ser2net or ConsolePi is also effective—especially for managing one or a few systems.

These options allow full remote access to the console, including the ability to view boot messages and interact with the system at the ISL prompt. However, when using modern KVM or serial hardware with older HP servers, be aware of common compatibility issues such as mismatched baud rates, incorrect cabling or signal levels, lack of full hardware flow control, and early boot output not appearing due to delayed session activation. Additionally, modern USB serial adapters sometimes fail to fully emulate older RS-232 signals, which can prevent proper console communication.
