Enterprise CA mandatory for AD integration?

Or can it be a stand alone CA on a Win 2K3 SP1 box?
Seeing 1-2 docs mention Enterprise CA. That the only way it will work?
Or can I install SSL on the above mentioned box as stand alone root CA?

You can do it as stand-alone.

Working.
Original cert did not have FQDN.
Adding with it seemed to rexolve problem.
