I'm receiving the following error when starting the HP iLO Pass-through Service. The service starts, however I'm unable to Terminal [Service] into the box. And yes, I can Terminal into the box using the regular network interface, just not through the iLO because of this error - I'm assuming.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: hplopts
Event Category: (1001)
Event ID: 4
Date: 10/22/2004
Time: 3:00:43 PM
User: N/A
Computer: NUNYA
Description:
Exception in Passthrough thread.
Data:
0000: 54 68 65 20 6d 61 6e 61 The mana
0008: 67 65 6d 65 6e 74 20 70 gement p
0010: 72 6f 63 65 73 73 6f 72 rocessor
0018: 20 72 65 74 75 72 6e 65 returne
0020: 64 20 61 6e 20 65 72 72 d an err
0028: 6f 72 20 28 34 32 39 34 or (4294
0030: 39 36 37 32 39 35 29 20 967295)
0038: 77 68 65 6e 20 61 74 74 when att
0040: 65 6d 70 74 69 6e 67 20 empting
0048: 74 6f 20 73 69 67 6e 61 to signa
0050: 6c 20 74 6f 20 69 4c 4f l to iLO
0058: 20 74 68 61 74 20 73 65 that se
0060: 72 76 65 72 20 69 73 20 rver is
0068: 72 65 61 64 79 2e 20 3a ready. :
0070: 3a 20 20 20 20 61 74 20 : at
0078: 53 79 73 74 65 6d 2e 45 System.E
0080: 6e 76 69 72 6f 6e 6d 65 nvironme
0088: 6e 74 2e 47 65 74 53 74 nt.GetSt
0090: 61 63 6b 54 72 61 63 65 ackTrace
0098: 28 45 78 63 65 70 74 69 (Excepti
00a0: 6f 6e 20 65 29 0d 0a 20 on e)..
00a8: 20 20 61 74 20 53 79 73 at Sys
00b0: 74 65 6d 2e 45 6e 76 69 tem.Envi
00b8: 72 6f 6e 6d 65 6e 74 2e ronment.
00c0: 47 65 74 53 74 61 63 6b GetStack
00c8: 54 72 61 63 65 28 45 78 Trace(Ex
00d0: 63 65 70 74 69 6f 6e 20 ception
00d8: 65 29 0d 0a 20 20 20 61 e).. a
00e0: 74 20 53 79 73 74 65 6d t System
00e8: 2e 45 6e 76 69 72 6f 6e .Environ
00f0: 6d 65 6e 74 2e 67 65 74 ment.get
00f8: 5f 53 74 61 63 6b 54 72 _StackTr
0100: 61 63 65 28 29 0d 0a 20   ace()..
0108: 20 20 61 74 20 68 70 6c at hpl
0110: 6f 70 74 73 2e 50 61 73 opts.Pas
0118: 73 74 68 72 75 2e 4c 6f sthru.Lo
0120: 67 45 78 63 65 70 74 69 gExcepti
0128: 6f 6e 28 45 78 63 65 70 on(Excep
0130: 74 69 6f 6e 20 65 2c 20 tion e,
0138: 45 76 65 6e 74 4c 6f 67 EventLog
0140: 45 6e 74 72 79 54 79 70 EntryTyp
0148: 65 20 74 79 70 65 2c 20 e type,
0150: 53 74 72 69 6e 67 20 65 String e
0158: 78 63 65 70 74 69 6f 6e xception
0160: 4d 65 73 73 61 67 65 2c Message,
0168: 20 49 6e 74 33 32 20 6d Int32 m
0170: 73 67 4e 75 6d 62 65 72 sgNumber
0178: 29 0d 0a 20 20 20 61 74 ).. at
0180: 20 68 70 6c 6f 70 74 73 hplopts
0188: 2e 50 61 73 73 74 68 72 .Passthr
0190: 75 2e 50 61 73 73 74 68 u.Passth
0198: 72 75 54 68 72 65 61 64 ruThread
01a0: 28 29 ()
I recommend that you contact support and get an incident number. It sounds like you are doing the setup right, particularly since you have been successful on other systems! Somtthing is unusual about this problem.

Can you post the incident number here?

I did open a case last week.

Ticket number is: 3208223724

I worked the HP Support quite a bit last week, however they were "going to call me back" and I haven't heard from them since.

I'm going to give them until 12:00PM EST today and then call them back.

This is a strange issue and I appreciate everyone looking at this.

Wish me luck - when I get a solution I will update this thread.

Thanks.

Received a "fix" from HP as they were able to duplicate the problem.

Here are the steps:

1. Disable the ILO Passthrough service, hplopts, in Services.
2. Power off the server.
3. Log into the ILO from a workstation
4. Set the ILO Passthrough Configuration to either Enabled or Automatic under the Administration/Global Settings screen. If the ILO was already set to Enabled or Automatic, first set it to Disabled and apply the setting to force a reset of the card.
5. Power up the server and set the ILO Passthrough service to Automatic and then start it.

Not exactly the "fix" I was hoping for, but it seems to correct the problem.

It sounds like there is a race condition between the OS starting up and between iLO initializing.

If you reset the host server (do not remove AC power because this resets iLO, too), does this fix the problem? I'm not suggesting this as a long-term fix, by the way.

The HP developer responsible for the pass through component is looking into a solution to this problem. It will likely be an update to the terminal services pass through component. Stay tuned...
