Thanks Rob for the response.
Between my post and your response, I have overwritten "Public" with my community string, AND set the Recipient to the SIM server address, but all SIM can seem to do is locate the hardware via ping. It cannot identify or do anything else with the switch.

Do I need to compile those MIB's for the switch on the SIM server as well?

Thanks.
Jeff
Hi all, I need some direction here. Until now, I have just been using CIM and now SIM to manage Proliant servers. So I understand the agent, MIB, management station concept.

Now we have a couple of SAN switches, a 2/16EL and 2/16V, and I am not quite sure how to set this up so SIM can monitor these switches. I downloaded the MIBs for the 2/16v.
Would my steps be like this?
1. install the MIB's on the SIM server
2. configure SNMP on the switch
3. run a discovery

Also, in the GUI of the 2/16V, under SNMP, I do not see how to add your own community string. For the servers, I add a community string and use that string to communicate to the SIM server. Is it different with switches and other devices? We also have some MSA1000's that I would like to monitor.

Any quidance towards whitepapers, detailed instructions, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

In the SNMP Setting on the switch, in the Community/Trap recipient field you can just highlight and overwrite one of the existing preset names.
You'll also need to set the Trap Destination for that Community name to point back to the SIM Server.

Just add the switches to the discovery range, run auto-discovery and they should be recognised.

Bounce a Server connected to the switch and you should see events generated as the Ports go offline / online.
