DMI is an old protocol that was very slow. HP SIM has the ability to use the newer WMI on Windows systems that is much better. You need to make sure your HP SIM server has the WMI Mapper installed and started and that credentials for WBEM are provided in the global protocol settings in HP SIM.

I am collecting data on my Desktops; all Dell PCs. For the older PCs with Win 2000 SIM finds the DMI 2.0 agent and picks up info and calls them desktops. for the PCs running Win XP it does not find a DMI agent and calls them Unmanaged and picks up very little info. How can I activate the DMI on Win XP machines?

On the machines that SIM calls desktops, there is a service running called win32sl.exe in a dmi folder. The Win 2000 OS PCs have this but my new Windows XP computer does not. Strange.....

Ok David. That explains why no dmi process. I will check out the WMI Mapper and WBEM settings and my HP SIM and report back on my progress.

In Options Settings WMI Mapper Proxy is checked and it has a port number listed there. Does WMI Mapper show up as a service in Windows? In WEBM settings what do you use for a username? Something with admin rights?

Got it figured out. In the Global Protocol Settings in SIM 4.2 for WBEM, I put in the usernames and passwords of a system administrator plus the admin id and passwords needed to log directly into a server or desktop computer when not on the network. Bingo! The WBEM data started flowing in like crazy. All kinds of neat info here. Last time booted up, memory processes, etc. Very useful.
