Hey folks,

I having a heck of a time finding what I need to know.

Just started a new job - I'm in charge of the desktops. We're using HP Insight Manager 4.2 .I'd like to get some URLs where I can find out about installing/configuring client agents and follow threads along the same lines.

Thanks

Jim

Jim,

While HP SIM is capable of detecting a desktop computer. SIM's capabilities are more for the servers, clusters and storage arrays.

Since there is no System Management Homepage or IM agents to install onto the client, there is limited information that SNMP can provide from the client to the SIM CMS.

I have a HP DC7100 workstation, and search HP's web site for software, and couldnt find anything. HP SIM does have a MIB that recognizes my desktop once I give it the IP address of my workstation.

I have included a screenshot of the output you get from SIM after aquiring the desktop.
I think this probibly not going to be enough information to do anything meaningful regarding management.

Brent

Thanks for the prompt reply Brent. I was told that this would engage clients to return the same sort of data, especially system, as the servers. Thanks for clearing that up. Now I can get back to setting up a WSUS and SMS.

Have a great weekend and thanks again.

Jim

HP SIM can gather data from 'clients' (desktops. notebooks, workstations) running Windows through WMI and get status information through ping or SNMP.
Let me see if I get this...

HP Insight Manager is really designed to support servers.

Since I am manageing desktops (we surrently have about 50 EVO deployed and will be deploying 50 more later this year, would it make more sense for me to look at Open View?

Basically what I'd like this desktop management software to do is:

- report client bios version
- report client OS version
- report hardware messages and errors (like S.M.A.R.T. errors
- report PC health, especially hardware and firware.

Right now all of our desktops are WIN2K.

Can HP Insight Manager 4.2 (already installed) are is OPen View better suited?

Thanks

JIm

Can Insight
