Make sure that "localhost" can be resolved locally (try pinging it). Check to see if the MSSQLSVR service is running - that's what that check is doing. If its running, cycle MSDE/SQL - something is not responding.

Check Internet Explorer, can it get to localhost or is that being blocked by a firewall, or other software. I.e. do you have a proxy connection and localhost isn't in the 'No Proxy' list...

Hey Jon,
I've found that you need to assign admin rights to the domain account that your installing SIM with on the database server. At least, that's what worked for me.

Okay, let us know. Shouldn't need that though, something is definetly hosing MSDE up. I'm assuming you are using the MSDE from the SIM 'kit' and are using the HPSIM installer to install MSDE.

Just have to ask. :)

Uninstall MSDE from Add/Remove Programs (shouldn't need a reboot but sometimes with Windows 2000 its needed if prompted).

Make sure there is no "Insight..." ODBC connection setup.

Run SETUP.EXE from the SIM kit. It should detect that there is no MSDE/SQL installed locally and prompt you to install MSDE in the SIM installer.

Okay. If you have the download kit extracted, go to the 'temp' area (dependent on your temp path) and check the HPSIMICF file directory.

There should be a MSDE.ICF file there. Open it in notepad, tweak the install setup path to add your named instance switches there, then run SIM (or just run that complete path manually).

Okay, maybe that wasn't the best suggestion. :)

How about just running this command instead (tweaking for your named instance of course):

setup.exe DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 REBOOT=ReallySuppress SAPWD="pwdâ INSTANCENAME="InstanceName" (you can add the SILENT switch if you want to; doesn't matter if you are manually doing it)
