Database Initialization Fails during install

During the install of SIM. the step that saying Populating Database. It errors out with the following error: "Database Initialization failed"

I checked out the log and found this.

I found an article here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322336

which states about changing your MSDE connection to be Mixed Mode and gives a reg change.

I'm going to apply the change, uninstall, reboot, and try again. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Were you doing this from a Domain or Local Account?

Is MSDE used for anything else?

I'd remove MSDE and HPSIM, login from a suitable Domain Admin Account and retry the installation. Let the HPSIM Install do the MSDE Installation.
That worked fine here on a test Server.

The errors seem to indicate it is some kind of access problem.

um alright. How do I let the SIM do the MSDE install? I have other MSDE instances on this server that cannot be removed or replaced.

You might want to see the thread:

MSDE isn't the most flexible of database servers if you're trying to manage multiple databases.

I thought that too so I decided to use my server that has SQL on it and create a database just for InsightManager. Low and behold I had the exact same issue. So its not isolated to MSDE or SQL.

I'm seeing the same!

Have a clustered SQL 2000 Server (service pack 3)

I can successfully install SIM 4.2 fine (System DSN works).

SIM 5.0 fails on both a new install or an upgrade of a newly installed SIM 4.2.

Fails to initialize the database.

On a new install it creates the database tables but cannot populate them.

The solution that worked for me on a Workstation running MSDE was to change the following registry entry: (set loginmode = 0)

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/MSSQLServer/MSSQLServer/loginmode = 0

This sets it to Windows Authentication Mode.
