You don't access the SMH through the console - just the act of logging into the console somehow generates the activity required to fill the randomization pool. That is why it is listed as a workaround.

-Rich

Hi all,
I recently installed the HP System management agent 7.40b on an ESX 2.5.1 server running on a BL40p. The installation succeeded without any issues. SNMP is working fine. I successfully added the server to SIM 5.0.
The problem I am having is that I cannot launch the HP system management home page. Upon launching it on a browser, I get a window to accept the certificate and then all I get is the browser trying to load the home page.

This is the error_log output..
[Fri Sep 30 07:42:21 2005] [notice] CompaqHTTPServer/9.9 HP System Management Homepage/2.1.2.127 configured -- resuming normal operations
[Fri Sep 30 07:44:40 2005] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.XX] Session timeout set to 15 minutes
[Fri Sep 30 07:44:40 2005] [error] [client XX.XX.XX.XX] Session maximum set to 128
[Fri Sep 30 07:44:41 2005] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting

There is no one connecting to the Home page, hence the maxclient should not be a non-issue. Restarting the hpsmhd daemon does not fix anything.
Here is the relevent netstat output
tcp 0 0 localhost.localdom:2381 *:* LISTEN 7203/hpsmhd
tcp 0 0 FQDM:2381 *:* LISTEN 7203/hpsmhd
tcp 0 0 localhost.localdom:2301 *:* LISTEN 7203/hpsmhd
tcp 0 0 FQDM:2301 *:* LISTEN 7203/hpsmhd

I am at a total loss.

Any help would be appreciated

Don't know if this will fix your problem but there is a new system management homepage update just release last week to address some lock up issues. (There have been numerous problems with sim 5 talked about in the last 2 weeks on this forum)

brandnew SMH version 2.1.3.132 (21 Sep 05)
It can be found here:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23560.html

The problem certainly resembles the issues mentioned in the previous link. But is there a limit to how long it takes for the random number generator to start generating enough random numbers for the HP management agent to work? I have waited close to 12 hrs with no results.

Did you try the workaround listed? It suggests that you log into the ESX console and then try to access the SMH. If that does not help then it would appear it is a different issue.

-Rich

How do I access the SMH thru a text console? Does ESX ship with a text browser or is there a way to access SMH thru the text console?
