I have a follow-up question then: by what I have seen so far, only users with full access to HPSIM (the CMS) can change the status of events (such as marking them cleared).

Is this true, or is there a way to allow others to change event status?

Arjen

Is there help and/or an explanation anywhere for what happens when an event is "assigned" to somebody?
What is the correct procedure?
Is the event then "owned" by the assignee...or something like that?

Arjen

Hello and Happy New year -

Assiging an event to someone is just informational. It does not any give ownership to the event to the assignee. It is there just to alarm the assignee that he/she needs to look into it.

Another thought to add...

The 'assign to' field is really a free-form field and not tied to users of hpSIM. That means that a valid 'assign to' can be people that are not hpSIM users, or, more creatively, can be more conceptual.

For example, a hardware failure requiring service could be assigned to 'repair' and then the 'comments' field could be used to provide more detail. Another assign to could be 'config' if there was a configuration problem and so on.

Especially if your company is using a real help desk management system, creative use of these fields in the event tables mean you could do things like print all of the items requiring a repair intervention over a time period.

Hey -

You can assign authorization based on system groups. In otherwords, you can give a specific user to only view and modify a specific device but not all.

I am aware of the "authorizations for specific systems" settings - and I am using them, but I do not think that they address this "change event status" question.

Let me give an example:
I have set up a user who has Limited access to SIM (as set under the user properties) but has access to the "All Tools" toolbox, and for all systems.
That user is still unable to change the status for any events.

The User property setting (Full/Limited/None) for access to SIM does not have any filtering for systems...and by what I am seeing, this access to SIM is where the right to change event status is being controlled?

You are correct.

Only users with full rights will be able to manipulate system events.

FYI - another usage for assignment is to enabled automatic notification of that assignment. You can create a task that emails a user whenever a new event is assigned to them.
