Email notifications

I've been looking into using the email notification function on our SIM 5 system - I'm a bit concerned that this will flood email inboxes with messages when a server goes belly-up! Can anyone tell me whether the email notification is sent out only when the health status *changes* to critical, or is a message sent out every time a critical server is polled? (If so, how can I limit the number of messages sent out?!)

We have set up an alert filter that is based on the events we want emailed. When an event is raised we get an email alert. We only get the one when the server changes status.
