To get alerts, SNMP on the Switch will need to be configured to send the SNMP Traps to HPSIM.

From the docs, that side should work. But you'll only see something when events happen on the switch - e.g. a port goes offline.
In the meantime the switch will be "Unknown" or "UnManaged" but you can configure HPSIM to display what you want so you don't have to rely on the SNMP Identification working, which is where the Manage System Types comes in.
Running SIM 5 SP4. When attemtping to use the 'Retrieve from system" function within Manage System Types, the query times out. My CMS is Windows 2003 SP1. Yet from a Linux box, I can use snmpwalk using same OID and it gets a response using SNMPv2. SNMPv1 or v3 fails.

Does SIM communicate using only SNMPv1? Difficult to find a concise answer in the docs...

Yes the docs are a bit vague. The technical reference guide says it supports v2 MIB's compiled in. But it doesn't mention the interrogation side.

What kind of device are you trying to identify? Odd it only responds to v2 requests.

I found it odd too, but I have lots to learn about SNMP. So it's a bit difficult to tell whether the issue is related to the box I'm trying to monitor, or if it's something I simply don't understand yet.

The box I am trying to monitor is a storage switch from a company called Acopia. I've compiled the MIB into SIM, but I wasn't getting alerts. That's what brought me to where I am now.

Acopia confirmed they only support SNMPv2. Wonder what HP's official support position is on this?

The switch is configured to send traps to SIM, and I know how to configure the system type without relying on SNMP identification. I also know the switch is generating traps. But what I can't confirm is whether the traps are being received by the CMS, or whether the CMS is not logging those events because of the SNMP communication problem I described initially. Tough to point one way or the other without knowing the CMS can communicate with the SNMP stack on the switch.

Have a look around the net, there's a utility around that will record that traps have been received. It's a while since I've used it but it did help with a similar issue. Again you may have the same v1 / v2 issue.

Check in HPSIM that Unregistered Events are accepted.
If you click on the System Name you can use the Events Tab which will list all events associated with the device.
